چکیده

We use a simple toy-model to discuss global MHD modes of a neutron star, taking into account the magnetic coupling between the elastic crust and the fluid core. Our results suggest that the notion of pure torsional crust modes is not useful for the coupled system, all modes excite Alfvén waves in the core. However, we also show that the modes that are most likely to be excited by a fractured crust, eg. during a magnetar flare, are such that the crust and the core oscillate in concert. For our simple model, the frequencies of these modes are similar to the “pure crustal” frequencies. In addition, our model provides a natural explanation for the presence of lower frequency (< 30 Hz) QPOs seen in the December 2004 giant flare of SGR 1806-20.

QPOs during magnetar flares are not driven by mechanical normal modes of the crust

Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) have been observed during three powerful magnetar flares, from SGR0526-66, SGR1806-20 and SGR1900+14. These QPOs have been commonly interpreted as being driven by the mechanical modes of the magnetar’s solid crust which are excited during the flare. Here we show that this interpretation is in sharp contradiction with the conventional magnetar model. Firstly, w...

A Magnetic Flux Tube Oscillation Model for QPOs in SGR Giant Flares

Giant flares from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are one of the most violent phenomena in neutron stars. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequencies ranging from 18 to 1840 Hz have been discovered in the tails of giant flares from two SGRs, and were ascribed to be seismic vibrations or torsional oscillations of magnetars. Here we propose an alternative explanation for the QPOs in terms...

On the theory of magnetar QPOs

We consider torsional oscillations of magnetars. This problem features rich dynamics due to the strong interaction between the normal modes of a magnetar’s crust and a continuum of Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) modes in its fluid core. We study the dynamics using a simple model of a magnetar possessing a uniform magnetic field and a thin spherical crust. Firstly, we show that global torsional mod...

Magneto-elastic oscillations of neutron stars: exploring different magnetic field configurations

We study magneto-elastic oscillations of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) which have been proposed as an explanation for the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) appearing in the decaying tail of the giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). We extend previous studies by investigating various magnetic field configurations, computing the Alfvén spectrum in each case and performin...
